Rhodes Traveller 32. This Traveler 32, “Sea Bean, is a rare find and an unmolestedBlue Water yacht. She is stored on the Hard that in Cambridge MD. Her rig is onland for inspection and is in good condition.TheTraveller 32 is the last design modification in a related series of boats byPhilip L. Rhodes. Rhodes is the designer of the famous Weatherly, thatsuccessfully defended the Americas Cup in 1962. Theoriginal design that set off a series of tough successful boats was for a boatcalled “Tidal Wave” in 1926. Tidal Wave was a full-keel ketch, approx. 28′ on the waterline. Next in the series was “TideRip”, then renamed “DogStar” which is the base design of the Traveller. Both “TidalWave” and “Dog Star” were wood boats with full keels, doubleenders with rudder hung at the point of the stern. They have bowsprits andboomkins and very heavy lead keels. Rhodes modified the design for a boatcalled “Quequeg” which was used by a UCLA professor oceanographicresearch. All these boats won many races during their commission. In the late 1960’s Rhodes modernized the “DogStar” design for cruse comfort and called it the Traveller 32. The changesinvolved cutting away the forefoot of the keel for maneuverability, making acutter-rig sail plan to increase the ease of plan options and speed, and movingthe galley back near the companionway on the port side, for a more spaciousv-berth.Early fiberglass construction was by Cheoy Lee inTaiwan, and then production was transferred to the Rawson boatyard in RedmondWashington in the early 1970s where Sea Bean was built. Rawson built boats aresolid fiberglass hulls with fiberglass/marine plywood deck and cabin. The decksare non-skid fiberglass with teak planking in the cockpit. A total of 28Travellers appear to have been built. The Traveller is 32’1″ LOA, 27’1″ LWL,with 10’2″ beam and 5′ draft. Displacement is 15,200 lbs., cut awayforefoot full keel with internal lead ballast; official tonnage is 11 NET and12 GRT. The Traveller 32 is built with the masthead double-spreader cutter rig,but a few ketches were also made. The cutter has a deck stepped mast.Sea Bean is a cutter rig. The PHRF rating is 192, compared to 216 for a Westsail 32. The rating indicates that the Traveller 32 can “sail circles around” a Westsail32.For more information, get Henderson’s book, “Philip L. Rhodes and his Yacht Designs,” there being an entire chapter devoted to this family of designs, with pictures of layup lines, photographs of the boats, and interior layouts.Rhodes was a great designer and his yacht designs were fast and hardy. There is also a Rhodes website.Tidal Wave, Dog Star, and the Traveller are well known as very balanced, fast offshore cruising boats. Sea Bean is dry inside, heavily constructed, and has stood the test of time very well. The through-hulls were replaced with vinal through hulls, and the rudder was rebuilt and designed to accommodate the auto pilot. Considering sea worthiness she scores well with a full keel, small cockpit with bridge deck, narrow beam, heavy construction, small heavy bronze ports, good passage forward on large side decks around the coach top, low cabin house with 6 standing room below, heavy stern hung rudder, cutter rig, lots of room for a dinghy between mast and stays, solid fiberglass hull and good balance. The Traveller was an active design throughout Rhodes career starting with “Tidal Wave” and “Dog Star” early on and then evolving with the modifications for the Traveller. This is a true example of a masters life work. The poetic lines and graceful water entry under sail is evident of Rhodes ability and love of sailing desighn. It is recommended that the standing rigging and chain plates be replaced if intended for blue waterwork. This rig and vessel are a good candidate for an upgrade to a dyneme standing rigging outfit, reducing the weight of the rig and increasing the ocean-going stability of the vessel. She is a beautiful little ship with many years of blue water service left in her.Sea Bean Hull #108348Rhodes Traveler32 double-enderHull manufacturer in Washington State by Rawson.Awesome Rawson known for their strong fiberglass vessels.Lg 32 Lg overall 38 Beam 10 2 Modified keel 5 depth Mast42 7 double spreader New bowsprit New boomkin Outboard hung rudder with trim tab for autopilot.Garmin chart plotter, Raymarine wind depth speed instruments, Raymarine autopilot.2 anchors, 300 ft of rode, 6 cushions for settees, Hard dingy with oars.
